PREVIEWS
Tuesday, February 4th - Dr. Bob McClure, president of The James Madison Institute, will discuss the Institute’s
observations on what is happening in Florida. The Institute is a
Florida-based research and educational organization whose mission is to keep the citizens of Florida aware of happenings in our state capital and to help shape our state’s future through the advancement of free market ideas on public policy issues. Since its inception in 1987, the Institute has remained nonprofit and nonpartisan. It takes no positions on specific bills. For example, eight straight storm-free years have given us an opportunity to address what must be done regarding our Florida Hurricane Catastrophic Fund while such action is still possible. McClure will also explain the Florida administration’s resistance to implementing the Common Core State Standards program which establishes new targets for mathematics and English language arts. McClure will be addressing decisions Florida voters will be making soon that will set our state's course in the decades ahead. Tuesday, February 18th - Our own Bob Stovall who will be making his 45th appearance before our club! Bob is a nationally renowned investment counselor who appeared for 28 years on the nationally syndicated Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser. Last year, in general, was not a bad year for equities. Some analysts are now predicting an adjustment
downward in 2014 (something that has already made an appearance in
January). As always, Stovall will be as entertaining as he is astute at
helping us navigate our personal investments through these unchartered
waters of 2014. RSVP Required: If you plan to attend Mr. Stovall's talk, please send a check payable to “The Ivy League Club” in the amount of $20 per ticket to:
The Ivy League Club (Stovall Luncheon) P.O. Box 53282 Sarasota, FL 34232
Tickets
are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No need to call for
confirmation. If your ticket request arrives after the event has been
sold out, we will notify you and return your check. For any questions, please contact Bill Grant at grantwb@cfl.rr.com.

REVIEWS
January 7th - Dr.
Michael Mullan, the President and CEO of the Roskamp Institute, gave a
fascinating talk on Alzheimer’s disease and introduced the club to a new
venture he is involved with called the Sci-Brain Program. The program
is designed to encourage lifestyle choices associated with the
preservation and improvement of memory and to reduce the factors
associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related
conditions. Dr. Mullan showed photos and graphics that clearly showed
the dangers of allowing one’s cognitive activities to fall into disuse. January 21st - Dr.
Mark Magenheim gave a very balanced and informative explanation of many
aspects of the Affordable Care Act and the impact it is having on
hospitals and other health care providers. The
three primary goals of the ACA are to increase access to health care,
increase the quality of health care, and decrease the cost of health
care. He went into details about the exchanges (a.k.a. marketplaces) and
the various provisions of the Act that are not as visible as the healthcare.gov website. Finally, he discussed the shortcomings of the Act as it is rolling out in the real world.
