Next Ivy League Club Event: October 2nd – Jeff Rodgers the Provost and Chief Operating Officer of the South Florida Museum and Bishop Planetarium, will present a science program that will set the stage for a possible future planetarium/museum/aquarium visit for our members. On July 17th Brynne Anne Besio, the CEO of the museum, discussed the expansion of the museum and described the museum’s facilities. Jeff Rodgers will explain some of the science that the museum provides for people of all ages. Before joining the South Florida Museum in 2004 as its Director of Education and the Bishop Planetarium as its Director in 2005, he served as the Director of the Moveable Museum Program of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and Executive Director of the Children’s Science Center in Cape Coral. This past April he regaled members of the Yale Club visiting the museum with fascinating information on astronomy, paleontology and archaeology.
FALL NIGHT AT THE OPERA—Barber of Seville, Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 7:30PM
This fall’s Night at the Opera will be Thursday, November 8th at 7:30pm. We will be seeing Gioachino Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” or ”The Useless Precaution”, one of the great opera buffa classics. It is presented in 2 acts. Prior to the performance is our optional opera dinner at the Bijou Café across the street from the Opera House. The dinner will be in the Bird Room to the right of the main dining room. We meet at 5pm and the kitchen requests that orders be given by 5:20pm, so folks aren’t rushed for dinner. We will have the standard full menu available. Join us for a lively performance of The Music Man at the Asolo Theater on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2PM. The Music Man was the sensation of Broadway when it opened in 1957 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This is one of the final concerts with Conductor Anu Tali, celebrating her six year tenure as Music Director with the Sarasota Orchestra. The program will feature principal players with the Sarasota Orchestra. This musical love letter to our community will include Ravel’s Bolero, an epic love story, a magical story of adventure, and a duet based on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast.
